Choosing the best school
Magnet programs are offered at all grade levels and include themes in the Performing Arts, Science and Technology, and Global and International Studies. FUSD also offers schools for the academically gifted. Review the information about each school before applying. Although FUSD attempts to portray each program accurately, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian of the applicant to understand the program offerings when applying. Applicants can always return to their home school, but cannot transfer to another magnet school unless there is space available.
Student Assignment Process
All applications for Magnet Schools and Open Enrollment are received at the FUSD Student Services Office. Only three magnet programs currently have admission criteria – Edison Computech Middle and High School and Sunnyside Doctor’s Academy.
Applicants for those schools must complete an additional application packet available at the schools and at Student Services. An Admission Screening Committee at each school reviews the applications and assigns the students.
Lotteries
All other magnet program admission and open enrollment admission is determined only by space. When the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available, FUSD will conduct random computerized lotteries to select students from the applicant pool for the available spaces. First priority in the lottery is given to FUSD students, except at Yokomi Elementary, where priority is given to the children of downtown employees.

Accepting a School
The parents or guardians of selected students receive a letter by U.S. Mail notifying the applicant of acceptance to a program. The letter includes pre-registration instructions. Selected students that do not pre-register for the Magnet School or Open Enrollment placement by the dates indicated in the letter, and printed in the FUSD Parent and Student Notification and Information Handbook, will forfeit their acceptance and be returned to the applicant pool. Parents and guardians who accept a Magnet placement, No Child Left Behind Transfer, or Open Enrollment Transfer will forfeit the applicant’s eligibility from all other applicant pools. Applicants waiting for the selection process to be completed at admission criteria schools can stay in an applicant pool, but should not accept another placement until notification from the school or they will be dropped from the Admission Screening Process. Additional lotteries for all other programs will be conducted after the Admission Screening and Selection Process is complete at Admission Criteria Schools.
