Welcome to Fresno Unified School District’s Social/ Emotional Support web page. The purpose of this page is to link families and students to mental health care resources designed to help get students get back onto the road leading to school success.  We hope that this web page will be useful if you, your child, or a friend may be experiencing difficulties coping with life's challenges.

WHAT DOES THIS OFFICE DO?

This office coordinates with District, community and public mental health providers, liaisons with mental health partners, and collaborates with community agencies in bringing services to students, developing procedures and protocols around social/emotional wellness, and brokering mental health education for staff, parents and students.  In addition, the office provides consultation to the District on Mental Health resources and oversees the Neighborhood Resource Centers and Restoring the Learning Environment Project.  


WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH?

The Surgeon General's report defines mental health as "the successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity." (Help Guide) external link

WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS?

  • Mental illnesses are disorders of the brain that disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, moods, and ability to relate to others.
  • Mental illness can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income.
  • Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. (NAMI)

Social/ Emotional problems affect one in five young people at any given time, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
