What Do Social Workers Do?

School Social Workers provide a link between home, school, and the community. School Social Workers promote and support students' academic and social success by providing strength-based services that may include:

  • Case Management
  • Advocacy for Students, Parents and the School System
  • Individual and Group Counseling
  • Psycho-Social Assessments
  • Home Visits
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Parent Education
  • Referrals to Community Resources
  • Facilitating Support Groups
  • Staff Development

School Social Workers Help Students:

  • Improve Attendance
  • Increase Academic Performance
  • Maximize Educational Opportunities
  • Develop Problem-Solving and Decision Making Skills
  • Resolve Conflicts
  • Build Self-Esteem
  • Establish Healthy Relationships
  • Access Specialized Programs
  • Remain in School and Graduate

School Social Workers Help Families:

  • Actively Participate in their Children's Education
  • Identify Environmental Factors Which Inhibit Learning
  • Meet the Social and Emotional Needs of their Children
  • Utilize School and Community Resources

Concerns School Social Workers May Address Include:

  • Chronic Truancy
  • Poor Academic Performance
  • Social and Emotional Issues
  • Aggressive or Impulsive Behavior
  • Substance Abuse
  • Poor Relationships with Peers or Adults
  • Teen Pregnancy
  • Domestic Violence
  • Homelessness and/or Frequent Moves
  • Abuse and/or Neglect

Where Are School Social Workers Located?

  • There are school social workers placed at 11 of the districts Middle Schools - Ahwahnee, Cooper, Fort Miller, Kings Canyon, Scandinavian, Sequoia, Tehipite, Terronez, Tioga, Wawona and Yosemite.
  • They also work with the corresponding elementary feeder schools.
