Working WIth Your Child's School

An important first step to working with your child’s school is working with your child. There are simple things we can do at home with our children such as:
- Let your children know you believe in them
- Read, read, read with your children and don’t forget to sing and talk with them
- Involve the extended family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins are key people in our children’s lives)
- Help your children learn to manage their time and organize their school supplies, including that space at home dedicated for homework
- Make sure your children do their homework, have fun asking them about it
- Limit TV watching and other activities such as video games, internet use etc.
- Show a positive attitude toward school and learning…a positive attitude is contagious and your children will get it from you
There are many things you can look for and ask when you visit school, for example:
- Is the school welcoming and respectful of children and adults?
- Is the school organized and orderly and is there high quality student work displayed throughout?
- Does the school have a good safety record?
- Are there opportunities for music, art and physical exercise?
- Do students appear to be interested in learning?
- Is the staff including the principal, teachers, librarian nurse, secretary, etc caring and professional?
- How early can students be dropped off? How late can they be picked up?
