Standard:  7.8.5 Detail advances in art and the understanding of human anatomy

 

Learning Outcome:  Understand how body proportions and ratios lead to beautiful artwork.

Materials:  Art posters, height chart, yard sticks, rulers handout, Da Vinci Power Point Presentation, computer, and projector

Opportunities to Learn/Perform (Procedure)

1.   What will students need to do to achieve knowledge and skills identified in standards and learning outcomes.  Students will need to cooperatively to measure each other.  I will demonstrate proper and respectful measuring techniques.  Also, students will be working with partners of the same gender.

2.  Procedure     

A. 10 minute Power Point and discussion about art techniques and Renaissance artwork.

B.    Students will be put matching gender groups.  Each student will quickly draw each other’s face.  

C.    I will model  proper and respectful measuring techniques.

D.   Students will measure each other and complete handout.  I will stamp papers as I see students following directions

E.    Once finished with the measuring, the students are to answer the questions at the bottom of the worksheet.  Next, we will have a class discussion about the different body proportions.  For instance, an adult is approximately eight heads tall.  Also, the human face is divided into three equal parts.  These are all discoveries by Da Vinci and others.

F.    Students will now be asked get up and look at the faces of the various Renaissance posters around the room.  They will be asked to measure the parts of the faces on the posters and see if the Renaissance artists followed the proportion techniques. Short discussion to follow.
