FUSD Braces for State budget impact

In the face of a growing state budget deficit and inaction from the State Legislature, Fresno Unified School District is taking significant steps to brace the district for the financial impact. The Governor’s proposed budget calls for mid-year reductions in 2008/09 and further reductions in 2009/10. Therefore, the district has instituted a suspension of hiring and purchasing effective immediately.

The Superintendent and Board of Education are committed to preserving the significant academic progress of FUSD students over the past three years, and will continue to employ any measure possible to minimize the impact on employees and the learning environment. The ability of FUSD to address these budget challenges is bolstered by its prudent budget actions, including – but not limited to – a $15 million budget reduction in 2008/09 without layoffs and preserving and advocating for a substantial budget reserve. The Superintendent and Board of Education are committed to taking responsible and strategic action to preserve and protect the district’s mission of preparing career-ready graduates.

Fresno Unified students tests scores improve for third straight year district posts historic gains in mathematics

For the third year in a row, FUSD demonstrated districtwide growth in both English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics on the California Standards Tests (CSTs). In addition, this is the third year of districtwide growth for all subgroups in both ELA and math with the exception of a one year dip in 2007 for African American students (in math).

Since 1998, we have never seen this kind of magnitude of across the board student achievement gains in grades 2-7 in mathematics for Fresno Unified, nor have we as a system been so targeted in our efforts, said Michael E. Hanson, Superintendent Fresno Unified upon reviewing the results. This represents approximately 1,200 students who are now proficient who were not before. If we keep them on track engaged and on target to graduate - we will be providing these students with an opportunity for the future much different than it would have been just a year ago.

Please visit the California Department of Educations website to view state, district and school results at http://star.cde.ca.gov/.
