The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program has come to BHS!

The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students, most especially those least served students in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path, will succeed in rigorous curriculum, enter mainstream activities of the school, increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and become educated and responsible participants and leaders in society. Some of our focuses are: organizing and maintaining a binder, Cornell note-taking, Costa’s levels of questioning, time management skills, positive character traits, inquiry-based learning and collaboration. Students are required to keep calendars or agendas to help them organize their time. College students work with students twice a week in tutorial groups, using inquiry based collaboration to help students find answers to questions they have from their core curricular classes. AVID students are encouraged to challenge themselves by taking rigorous courses, and many of them are enrolled in GATE, honors and AP courses. Note-taking and organizational skills learned in AVID provide them with the structure they need to succeed in rigorous courses.
