Academic Competitions

Various academic classes are also designed to provide students with experience in specific scholastic competitive events. Three such teams are described below.

Mock Trial
In 1980, Constitutional Rights Foundation (CRF) introduced the Mock Trial program to all the counties in California. The program was created to help students acquire a working knowledge of our country’s judicial system, develop analytical abilities and communication skills, and gain an understanding of the obligations and responsibilities as participating members of society. The High School Mock Trial Program provides a challenging opportunity for personal growth and achievement.

Each year, CRF creates and produces a new set of Mock Trial materials based on an important issue facing America's youth. The materials include a hypothetical criminal case, including summaries of case law, witness statements, official exhibits, and simplified rules of evidence, competition rules and guidelines. Teams of students prepare and present the trial from the perspectives of both the prosecution and the defense. Mock Trial team members play different roles, including trial attorneys, pretrial motion attorneys, witnesses, clerks, and bailiffs.

In addition to the trial competition, The Courtroom Artist and Journalism contests are companion programs to the Mock Trial. During the Mock Trial competition, students have the opportunity to sketch a courtroom scene or write an article reporting on the trial as it unfolds.

Bullard High School's Mock Trial coach is Cynthia Lawrence.

Forensics
Forensics is an academic class that encompasses both speech and debate. The term “forensics,” with connotations of cutting up bodies in a morgue, actually refers to “courtroom procedure” with highly refined language. We participate in four types of debate, in 12 speech events, and in Student Congress. We belong to 5 different leagues that allow us to compete at local level, the state level and at the national level. Speech events include literary, persuasive, extemporaneous and current events speeches, improvisational and creative speeches. Last year, Bullard’s debate team was the only debate team in FUSD that “broke” beyond the preliminary rounds. Even Clovis USD did not advance that far! This year Bullard has 3 solo debaters and 1 debate team that has so far qualified to compete at the next level of debate—the last competition that qualifies for the state competition. Bullard debaters and speakers do the darndest things!

The Forensics coach is Milla Smith.

Academic Decathlon
Academic Decathlon is an intense academic competition where students study materials and take tests in ten events: music, art, economics, social science, science, mathematics, interview, essay, language & literature, and speech. This year the students are studying the over-arching themes of "Latin America" and evolutionary biology. Although studying for hours upon hours in order to take a day's worth of tests may not sound like much fun, the ability to learn tons of information at a quick pace (and your own pace) is exciting and liberating to many. What's more, there's the opportunity to earn medals, get scholarships, and possibly compete with some of the brightest minds in California at the state competition. Bullard High School has been to the state competition two times in the last four years and established themselves as one of the top 15 schools in the state--not bad considering California has won the national competition more times than any other state.
The Academic Decathlon coach for Bullard's team is Steven Fisher.
