History of Starr School

Starr School was named in honor of Dorothy Starr. She had served in the Navy for a brief time during World War II. She was a dedicated and highly respected teacher. She had taught at Heaton School and at Malloch School. She was dying of cancer at the time the school was named in her honor. It is believed that she was not aware that she had been honored with the naming of Starr School.

Starr School opened in the spring of 1974. It was established to ease the burden of the over crowed conditions at Malloch School. Malloch was on double sessions at this time. Temporary structures were moved in from the old Emerson School. Emerson had been located at Santa Clara and "K" streets, and it was then discontinued.

The permanent structure was occupied in the Fall of 1980.
