"Reach For The Stars" was created many years ago by Ron Mortanian, a special education teacher at Tehipite Middle School in Fresno, California. It was first placed into practice by Mr. Mortanian while teaching at Central Union High School. The program was developed to keep his special education students interested and excited about coming to school. At that time many of the students were only interested in receiving their drivers license and dropping out of school.
The name "Reach For The Stars" did not become attached until Mr. Mortanian began teaching at Tehipite Middle School. A fellow teacher at Central Union High School suggested that the students write to the stars (Hollywood celebrities) as a way to incorporate reading and writing into his curriculum. A book was loaned to Mr. Mortanian to begin his project. After many weeks of developing a writing unit, the students composed their letters, and the celebrities responded most graciously. The students were excited and received numerous cards, letters, and signed photographs from their favorite celebrities. The program proved to be very successful and rewarding. School attendance and achievement scores increased.
When Mr. Mortanian moved to Fresno Unified School District at Tehipite Middle School, the "Reach For The Stars" program became a community partnership. Mr. Mortanian decided that his program would work best if the commnuity would support and sponsor various portions of it. To do it right he incorporated; Haron Jaguar, George's Shish Kebab Restaurant, Hye Quality Bakery, Piccolor Flowers, Radison Hotel, individual contributors, radio, television and the local newspapers.
To date, Mr. Mortanian's "Reach For The Stars" program has flown in or made contact with over 75 individuals and has had over 175 telephone calls. It is the ONLY program of its kind in the United States.
