Performing Arts


COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Mixed Chorus

Course Number -- 1428-01


This class is for all students interested in learning the fundamentals of vocal singing. Emphasis will be on learning correct posture, breath support, vocal production, diction, expression, and intonation. A wide variety of choral music will be studied and performances are a required part of the class.

Women's Choir
Course Number -- 1400-01


Open to all women who are interested in learning proper singing techniques. emphasis will be on learning correct posture, breath support, vocal production, diction, and part singing. A wide variety of vocal literature will be studied. Performance is a required part of the class.

Beginning Orchestra
Course Number -- 1320-01


This class offers instruction for students wanting to learn violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Students will learn to read music in preparation for Symphonic Orchestra.

Symphonic Orchestra
Course Number -- 1324-01


Prerequisites: Audition or permission of instructor. Minimum of one year performance required.

Techniques of the various instrument of the orchestra: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Small ensembles are also included. Orchestra members are required to perform in various concerts, festivals, and for school functions throughout the school year.

Piano I
Course Number -- 1374-01


Prerequisite: Instructor permission

Students will learn basic musical skills and beginning piano technique. They will learn the fundamentals of music theory and ear training skills. Music history may be a part of the course. A semester recital may also be required.

Piano II
Course Number -- 1376-01


Prerequisite: Piano I and/or Instructor permission

Students will learn piano technique suitable to their ability level. They will study piano literature from all musical periods and develop a more complete understanding of the fundamentals of music theory. Ear training and sight reading will also be part of the course. Performance for the class is a requirement including at least one class recital each semester.

Jazz Band I


Prerequisite: Level III proficiency, audition, and/or permission of instructor.

This course is a study of the literature, rehearsal, and performance techniques of past and current popular-jazz music with emphasis on correct style and feel. Improvisation will be introduced at this level. The course is recommended for instrumentalists with little or no jazz experience.

Jazz Band II
Course Number -- 1334-01


Prerequisite: Audition and/or permission of instructor

This course is a study of literature, rehearsal, and performance techniques of past and current popular-jazz music with emphasis on techniques of improvisation and styles. It is open to students of advanced proficiency and will require out-of-school practices and performances. Students may be required to be members of the Symphonic Band or Orchestra.

Woodwind Ensemble
Course Number -- 1356-01


This class concentrates on the techniques of woodwind instruments as they relate to the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and/or Orchestra. Problems of rhythms, key signatures, proper breathing, correct embouchure, and all other aspects of woodwind musicianship will be addressed. The class performs as a separate ensemble or as a section within other performing groups. Performance is a required portion of the class.

Percussion Ensemble
Course Number -- 1360-01

A performance group which utilizes all forms of contemporary percussion instruments. Performance is a required portion of the class.

Brass Ensemble
Course Number -- 1366-01

This class concentrates on the techniques of brass instruments as they relate to the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and/or Orchestra. P.E. Band
Course Number -- 4300-01

Prerequisite: Concurrently enrolled in Band

May be used to meet the mandatory physical education requirements only when substantial compliance with the criteria of the State Handbook on Physical Education can be shown, when conducted by a teacher holding a physical education credential, and when they adequately prepare students for the physical performance testing required by the Education Code.

Band Auxiliary
Course Number -- 1540-01

Prerequisite: Audition, and/or permission of instructor

For attached units of the band featuring Rifle Corps, Flag Girls, Color Guard, Letter Corps, and/or Majorettes. Training in varied dance forms. Performance is a required portion of the class.

Theatre Arts I
Course Number -- 2352-01

How'd you like to get past your shyness? How'd you like an outlet for the exhibitionist in you? Learn about acting in commercials, plays, and TV, doing stage tails and stunts, auditioning and all the backstage introductions to drama. Take DRAMA 1 --- No prerequisites.

Theatre Arts II, III, IV
Course Number -- 2358-01, 2364-01, 2390-01

How'd you like to focus on acting? Learn acting styles, dialects, and accents, acting techniques, advanced work in auditioning and scene work with special opportunities in public performance during Brown Bag Theatre Nights and the "Road Show".

Prerequisite: A "C" or better in Drama I and consent of the instructor.

Stagecraft I
Course Number -- 1224-01

How'd you like to learn to build a set, a costume or a character make-up, run a computer light board, make special effects, try to become "A Flyer"? You'll do the most important work in theatre with good opportunities for college scholarships and future careers.

No prerequisite but a class contract with the teacher.

P.E. Theatre Movement

How'd you like to get P.E. credit for learning to juggle, fence, do mime, judo, fight choreography and Renaissance dance and games? Open to all 10, 11, and 12th grade students who have taken or are concurrently taking drama or by special consent of the teacher.

Intro to Theatre
Course Number -- 0009-01

Open to 9th graders only:. How'd you like a taste of theatre for a semester to back with your required Sociology for Living class? Intro to Drama has it all: Acting, theatre exercises, film and technical theatre. We also focus on careers in this class and have working professionals who visit our classroom.
