Information on the Internet

Electronic information networks, such as the Internet, are important educational resources in the classroom. The Internet is a global network made up of many smaller contributing networks to support the open exchange of information among many different kinds of institutions all over the world. This system gives immediate access to businesses, governments, educational institutions and other organizations.

The Fresno Unified School District will have access to the Internet. As a learning resource, the Internet is similar to books, magazines, video, CD-ROM's and other sources that inform, educate or entertain. The Fresno Unified School District considers the use of electronic information networks, like the Internet, as an educational resource which meets district guidelines and board policy.

Fresno Unified School Officials cannot completely control the Internet environment for students. Therefore, we must make sure that parents/guardians are aware of the individual student's responsibility to use Internet resources in an ethical and educational manner. Internet access carries with it the potential to encounter information that some have identified as controversial and inappropriate for students. Information on the Internet changes rapidly, and it is not possible to predict or control what students may encounter.

Our goals in providing this service are the following:

  • To enhance innovative education for all students
  • To provide quality integrated educational opportunities and equal access for all students
  • To empower staff to effectively use technology to enhance instruction and increase productivity and life-long learning
  • To promote educational excellence by facilitating resource sharing, innovation and communication
  • The use of e-mail on school machines must be limited to educational needs or school business

Establishment of Acceptable Use Guidelines (AUG)

An Acceptable Use Guidelines is a written agreement signed by students, their parents and teachers. The AUG outlines the terms and conditions of Internet in the school district. This AUG specifically defines the acceptable use of the Internet, it provides rules of on-line behavior and describes access privileges. The AUG covers penalties for violations of the policy, such as vandalism of the computer system.

Personal Responsibility

It is essential for each user on the Internet to recognize their responsibility in having access to vast services, sites, systems and people. The user is ultimately responsible for their actions in accessing Internet services.

Along with access to computers and people all over the world comes the availability of material that may not be considered of educational value in a school setting. The Fresno Unified School District will take precautions to restrict access to controversial materials by teaching students about responsible use and by attempting to block student access to inappropriate materials.
