Objectives for School Year 2002-03
Fresno High will pilot and (upon
acceptance) implement a district-wide student information system.
- Fresno High will be the first high school to access a completely
web-based student information system. In addition to parent/student
access, the new system would allow teacher grade entry from any
location.
The Fresno High pilot is contingent on
three main benchmarks:
- Selection of a vendor for the online system. Bidding process
closes June 21. Selection should be complete by early August.
- Completion of interface programming between the FUSD
mainframe and the new online system. This has proved to be an issue with
the greatest number of unknowns.
- Validation of system data integrity and Fresno High's
hardware and network capacity.
History
FUSD implemented an online
student information system at five high schools during the 2001-02
school year. Edison, Sunnyside, McLane, Hoover, and Bullard high
schools currently use an online system for attendance and grades.
- The current version allows parent and student access to grades,
but does not allow schools to automatically transfer grade,
attendance, or discipline information between sites. The current
implementation falls short of a district-wide vision of a unified,
real-time system.
- FUSD intended to deploy a district-wide version at Fresno High,
but legal contract issues halted any further implementation.
Real-time Information
Technology Services understands the
importance and urgency of bringing more schools online. Comments from
parents and school site staff testify to the significant impact real-time
access has on student achievement. School sites found students taking more
ownership of assignments, grades, and attendance as a result. Overall,
real-time access improved communication between all stakeholders. The
Fresno High pilot and implementation is of highest priority.
Future Timeline
The following is a tentative timeline for
the next steps:
June 21, 2002 - Request for Proposals (RFP)
for the district-wide student system closes
July-August 2002 - Review and Selection of
a vendor
August-September 2002 - Installation and
migration of student data to new system
October 2002 - Pilot and User Acceptance
tests with teachers, office staff, and administrators
