Educational and civic leaders, involved parents, and eager students have recognized the need to create a positive learning sanctuary in downtown Fresno.

Everyone in the community has joined in the renaissance of downtown Fresno with the recent dedication of Yokomi Elementary. Students from throughout the Fresno Unified

School District, as well as students whose parents live outside
the district but who work in Downtown Fresno,
can obtain an education that is centered on
science, technology, art, music and
academics at Yokomi Elementary. The
newly constructed building that houses Yokomi Elementary features the latest educational technology in California, six state of the art science instructional labs, a cafeteria/multi-purpose room and over 34 permanent classrooms.

Art and Music in the Classroom

On any given day, students will be expanding their creativity under the direction of dedicated class-room teachers, teaching specialists, and supportive volunteers. The art and music programs are designed
to be engaging and stimulating, but still connected
to state academic standards. Each student participates in a specialized music curriculum designed on the well-documented connection between music, art and the development of critical cognitive skills.

History and Social Sciences

Although Yokomi has a science and technology theme, all academic subjects are taught with
a focus on meeting state standards. The school’s goal is to develop well-rounded, civic-minded
learners who will understand and appreciate the history and cultural diversity of their community.

Reading in the Classroom

Yokomi Elementary has taken a very practical approach to developing important literacy skills.

OUR GOALS
• Each and every student must have access to the regular classroom teacher and the District’s adopted curriculum to maintain steady improvement in reading skills
• It is a school wide goal to have all students on grade level in reading.
• All students will have access to a wide array
of reading materials and support personnel.

Science in the Classroom

FUSD has made a remarkable commitment to the students attending Yokomi Elementary. Yokomi’s science-based cur-riculum is taught on a daily basis by certificated teachers with specialized training in science. As students expand their appreciation of the world around them, with practical and engaging examples from life, earth and physical science, parents have witnessed an awakening of their child’s potential. Each fall and each spring, students have the opportunity to showcase their achievements at the Yokomi Science Fair, which invites the parents and community to share in the excitement of the learning environment.
