The Internet can provide students with an abundance of up-to date information and communications resources, encourage purposeful writing, increase motivation to write, and help develop friendships without having to worry about stereotypical first "face-to-face" impressions. When compared to traditional methods, telecommunications in the form of email for example, offers students a more realistic way to broaden perspectives on global and multicultural issues.

The Internet also provides many benefits for teacher. It provides instant access to educational research, curriculum sources, lesson plans, online experts, discussion centers, and communication tools. This wealth of information open doors for collaboration, encourages alternate instructional strategies, and enriches the curriculum.

Therefore, the ePALS SchoolMail Web-based email service is hosted through IBM e-business Hosting Services and includes the following features:

  • Send and receive file email.
  • Built-in language translation(English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and Korean) allows you instantly translate messages while composing or reading.
  • Spell check with a multilingual dictionary
  • Hierarchical folders and custom folders for mail storage and organization
  • Multiple email signatures
  • A flexible address book with group capabilities
  • Importation of other email address books in .csv format
  • Automatic email replies that can be used when away

In addition, ePALS SchoolMail features a unique profile system that enables teachers to describe themselves or their classes and have that description stored in a database. This allows other teachers and/or staff members to search for and contact profile creators. Profiles can be kept completely private, or access can be restricted to users within their school, their district (in this case Fresno Unified School District) or available to the public ePALS.com global community, if desired.
